The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 blew away the competition for the top spot with a $123 million opening. That stands as the biggest opening of 2014, beating Transformers: Age of Extinction’s $100 million. The number is down from the first two Hunger Games films, which was an expected development. This film has had slightly weaker reviews and is the first part of the final chapter in the franchise, meaning enthusiasm was just a bit weaker. The film added $152 million overseas for a $275 million worldwide opening weekend. With a still-positive critical reaction and an excellent A- CinemaScore, the film should top $350 million domestically and perhaps climb even higher. The budget (which is shared with Part 2) was $250 million.
