In a Q&A with Entertainment Weekly about Exodus: Gods and Kings, Christian Bale spoke about the ending of The Dark Knight Rises. At one point in the film, Alfred spoke about a fantasy of his about Bruce Wayne giving up his life as Batman and retiring. That’s exactly what happens at the end of the film, as Bruce Wayne is spotted by Alfred with Selina Kyle after faking his death. Fans have speculated that this was simply a dream. Bale disagrees.

He said: “[Alfred] was just content with me being alive and left, because that was the life that he always wanted for him. I find it very interesting, and I think that with most films, I tend to say it’s what the audience thinks it is. My personal opinion is, no, it was not a dream — that that was for real, and he was just delighted to find that he had freed himself from the privilege but ultimately the burden of being Bruce Wayne.

He also joked that Wayne has “eaten lots of mozzarella by this point, he won’t fit back in that suit.”
