As we know by now, Roberto Orci will not direct Star Trek 3. Orci was set to make his directorial debut with the film but departed the project earlier this month, and Badass Digest claims to know why: Paramount was hoping to give the film more of a Guardians of the Galaxy feel.
According to the site, Paramount saw the overseas success of Guardians and wanted to bring in some of that money for Star Trek, a franchise that has always been stronger domestically. The site noted, “They look at Rocket and Groot and then they look at Keenser and they wonder why he doesn’t have more of a role.”
Who’s Keenser, you ask? That was Scotty’s alien sidekick in the past two films. Of course, the success of Guardians wasn’t just on Rocket and Groot but rather the overall quality of the film along with the Marvel/Disney marketing machine, which Paramount just doesn’t quite have for Star Trek despite its blockbuster status for the rebooted films.
Star Trek 3 has no official release date set.
