Furious 7 destroyed the box office this weekend with $143.6 million, the ninth biggest box office opening weekend of all-time. The previous April weekend record holder was Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s with $95 million. This is the largest opening for any property that is not an adaptation of a novel or comic.
Critics gave the film an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences delivered an A CinemaScore. The film added $240.4 million overseas to give it a total worldwide first-weekend gross of $384 million.
Note: Numbers include Sunday estimates and are three-day estimates. A studio recoups 55% of a film’s grosses on average, meaning it needs to approximately double its budget to be profitable during its theatrical run.
