J.J. Abrams Wants Openly Gay Characters In Star Wars

According to People, while speaking at the US-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards, J.J. Abrams discussed the possible inclusion of openly gay characters in the Star Wars Universe. There have been gay characters in the tie-in books, including Imperial defector Sinjir Rath Velus (Star Wars: Aftermath) and Moff Delian Mors (Lords of the Sith). Abrams said: “When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity, so of course. To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

Abrams previously advised when it came to casting people of color (John Boyega, Oscar Isaac) or female protagonists in the film, he “just knew that this movie needed to look the way the world looks.”
