David Ayer recently spoke with Empire about a variety of topics regarding Suicide Squad, including why Jared Leto’s Joker featured his controversial grill and “Damaged” tattoo. “This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection,” Ayer said. “But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”
Ayer also talked about Joker’s presence in the film, which some fans felt was less prevalent than expected. “I think there was an expectation of what the film should have been,” he said. “People really wanted more Joker and wanted him to be an A-plot component. And it’s funny how the critics call it a cameo but he has some fantastic sequences that are really important for the film. He really influences the journey quite a bit.”
Suicide Squad has been number one in theaters for the past three weeks, and is in theaters now.
