Sony Pictures has finally set a release date for its Masters of the Universe film. The company announced that an adaptation of the Mattel toy line will hit theaters December 18, 2019.
Masters of the Universe follows Prince Adam, who has the ability to transform into a warrior called He-Man. As He-Man, Adam becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor. The property was launched as a Mattel toy line and then became a multiple animated series along with a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren.
Entertainment Weekly reports that McG is no longer attached to direct the film. Sony is currently meeting with directors to replace him for the script by David S. Goyer.
Although no cast members have been announced yet, the website notes that “A-list talent” is up for roles in the project. It was previously rumored that Kellan Lutz was in talks with McG and producer Mary Viola. Lutz said the meeting was “amazing”. McG then said Lutz would be considered “very, very carefully,” as he was “passionate” about the property.
