A new bill introduced in Washington by Senator Tammy Duckworth is aiming to make bus rides safer for Illinois students. The School Bus Safety Act would require seatbelts in all seats on school buses, as well as additional safety measures like stability control and automatic braking systems. A similar bill was passed in Tennessee in 2016 after a bus accident killed six children. The bill would also provide a grant that would be used to help schools modify their current fleets to meet new standards.
