A Jackson County judge is vacating the case against Gaege Bethune, who had been charged with first degree murder in the 2014 death of SIU student Pravin Varughese. A jury had convicted Bethune in June and sentencing was set for today before the announcement was made that the case was being vacated. Prosecutors state that Bethune and Varughese were intoxicated while driving around Carbondale and got into a fight, with Bethune causing head injuries that left Varughese disoriented, leading to his hypothermia death. The case is now set for a new trial.
