It came down to a 17-school margin, but IHSA member schools have approved district play for varsity football starting in the 2021 season.
District play will reorganize all football schools into 8 classes before the start of the 2021 season for a period of two years, with enrollments and classes re-evaluated every two years. Each class will then be organized into eight geographic districts and each district will play a round robin schedule every year. The top four teams from each district will make the postseason.
324 schools voted in favor of the proposal, while 307 voted against. 69 schools abstained.
