Carbondale Man Dead After Driving Vehicle into Mississippi River

Cape Girardeau – A Carbondale man is dead after driving into the Mississippi River near Cape Girardeau. According to a release from the Cape Girardeau Police Department, 83-year-old Curtis Hawkins was found in the driver’s seat of his vehicle on Tuesday after crews and divers were able to pull the vehicle from the 34-degree water after witnesses report seeing the vehicle drive into the water from the Red Star Boat Ramp at around 9:00pm Monday. Attempts to pull the vehicle from the water Monday night were unsuccessful due to heavy fog. There are no signs of foul play at this time, but an investigation is ongoing.
