Carbondale Man Sentenced in Connection to 2018 Death of Child Due to Reckless Driving

Jackson Co. – A Carbondale man is set to spend the next 30 months in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to reckless homicide. According to a release from the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, 57-year-old Gary Starks pleaded guilty in relation to an incident in August of last year near Attucks Park in Carbondale when Starks, driving 60mph in a 30mph zone struck and killed a 5-year-old child crossing the roadway. Starks’ sentence will be followed by a year of mandatory supervised release.
