CARBONDALE – Carbondale police are searching for three black men allegedly involved in a shooting that left one individual dead Sunday morning in Carbondale.
According to a police report, the police department received several reports of gunfire in the 500 block of S. Illinois Avenue around 1:20 a.m. Officers in the area on foot located a gunshot victim with life-threatening injuries.
Officers performed life saving measures on 27-year-old Keon Cooper, and the Jackson County Ambulance Service drove him to the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale where he was pronounced deceased. An investigation revealed Cooper was shot by two suspects armed with handguns, with a third fleeing with them in a black, newer-model Kia Optima or similar vehicle.
Police said one suspect is a black male, early 20s with an unknown height and average build, and was wearing a gray or white and black zip-up hooded jacket with a white t-shirt underneath. He has long black braided or dread-lock hair, baggie clothes and was armed with a handgun.
The second suspect is also a black male in his early 20s with long, black dreadlock style hair with an average build and unknown height wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and faded blue jeans with a dark stripe along the side.
The third suspect is a black male of thin build wearing a dark colored hooded jacket with a white symbol/name on the left chest area, and was also armed with a handgun. The suspects are considered armed and dangerous. The investigation is ongoing.
