BENTON – The Franklin County Board Monday night accepted a $15,800 bid from McVicker Demolition of Herrin for the demolition of the Benton Evening News building on E. Church St.
County Board Chairman Randall Crocker said demolition work won’t begin immediately.
The county bought the building in 2019 for $45,000. Once the building is demolished, work will begin on a new parking lot to assist downtown Benton parking, particularly when construction begins on the new Benton Square courthouse later this year.
The parking lot should be finished by early spring or summer.
The newspaper office closed in 2017. It’s staff works remotely.
