Benton City Council to Act On and Revisit Parking on Square

BENTON – The Benton City Council is expected to discuss and possibly act on an ordinance amending parking restrictions for the outer parking spots on the Benton Square during tonight’s 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall on South Main.

Several merchants on and off the square addressed their parking concerns with the council at the previous meeting. The merchants said they didn’t believe parking in front of their businesses should be for employees of the square businesses or the county, and wanted the parking spaces to be for customers only.

Franklin County Circuit Clerk Jim Muir told merchants several parking spaces would open once the County Clerk’s office and Treasurer’s office moved to the Campbell Building.

There was also discussion with Muir regarding parking of construction vehicles during demolition and construction of the new courthouse, plus where the county employees will be park once the move is made to the Campbell Building.

Muir said there would be parking available on both sides of Church St., in the parking lots, and that the First Baptist Church offered their parking lot as well.

Franklin County purchased the former Benton Evening News building late last year and plans to tear down the building soon to make way for a new parking lot to assist with parking on the square.
