Suspect Revealed in Monday Shooting & Standoff with Carbondale Police

CARBONDALE – Carbondale Police have released the name of the suspect involved in a shooting and standoff with police on E. Ashley St. in Carbondale Monday afternoon.

Accprding to release, 27-year-old William J. Stewart of Carbondale was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Stewart was lodged in the Jackson County Jail.

After getting a report of shots fired in the 400 block of East Ashley around 3:15 p.m. Monday, police went to the scene to investigate, learning a dispute amongst acquaintances in the parking lot led to gunfire. Detectives determined one of the armed suspects, identified as Stewart, fled into a home in the 400 block of E. Chestnut St. Officers secured the home and immediately began negotiating with Stewart in an attempt to secure his surrender. A search warrant for the home and an arrest warrant Stewart was secured while negotiations continued.

The Carbondale Police Department Special Response Team served the search warrant at the home at 8:30 p.m. and took Stewart into custody on the arrest warrant. There were no reported injuries regarding the original incident. Neither Stewart who was arrested nor the officers involved in the arrest were injured.

The Illinois State Police and the Jackson County Ambulance Service assisted during the incident.
