LAKE OF EGYPT – The Southern Illinois Power Cooperative is circulating a plan to shut down its coal-fired generator at Lake of Egypt.

CEO Don Gulley said the main plant is expected to stay open and continue to run a small coal-fired unit and two natural gas units. According to Gulley, the plan is expected to save the company $125 million dollars.

Employees in Unit 4 are expected to work until the possible closure inĀ October 2020. A decision on could come as early as July.

If approved, the shut-down would lead to the unemployment of dozens of workers.
