Williamson County Now Has Had Most COVID-19 Cases in Region

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – Williamson and Jackson County continue to post high numbers of confirmed new COVID-19 cases, as Williamson passed the latter Wednesday with the most in the region since the beginning of the pandemic.

However, the region-wide weekly average of positive tests showed signs of consistency, remaining at 6.9% in Region 5.

Local case breakdown:

  • Williamson County: 35, one death at a long-term care facility
  • Jackson County: 24
  • Jefferson County: eight
  • Pulaski County: five
  • Franklin, Perry and White counties: four
  • Union County: three
  • Alexander, Hardin, Johnson and Saline counties: one each

Randolph County, the southernmost county in Region 4 of the states mitigation groups covering the metro-east, reported six new cases after a fresh set of restrictions, including a ban on indoor dining, was placed on the region.

The Illinois Department of Public Health announced 2,128 new cases of coronavirus statewide, including 27 additional confirmed deaths.
