Basketball Among Winter Sports On Hold Under New COVID-19 Guidelines

CHICAGO (AP) – Youth and adult basketball, hockey and wrestling are being put on hold under new COVID-19 safety guidelines released by Illinois health officials.

The winter sports guidelines move basketball into the “high risk” category, alongside hockey and wrestling. State public health director Doctor Ngozi Ezike said the chance of transmission is “just too high with these particular sports.”

However, teams will be able to hold no-contact training. Cheer and dance have been moved to “low risk” and can continue if masking and social distancing is enforced.

Ezike said several factors went into the determination of what sports would be placed on hold.

Other winter sports considered “low risk” include gymnastics, diving, swimming and bowling.
