Former Johnson County Deputy Sentenced for Fatal Alcohol-Related Incident

JOHNSON COUNTY – Former Johnson County Deputy Cyle Harner has been sentenced to three years behind bars in connection to a fatal 2018 alcohol related accident.

According to a release from the Johnson County State’s Attorney’s Office, Harner was sentenced Friday after being found guilty on one charge of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI in November.

His sentence follows a three-year court battle stemming from a March 2018 accident in which an off-duty Harner wrecked his truck, killing passenger Troy Newman and seriously injuring Harner and another passenger. Along with the three-year sentence, Harner will also serve two years of supervised release.
