BROOKPORT – A Brookport man was taken into custody following a hours-long standoff with law enforcement from Massac County and Illinois State Police Friday afternoon in Brookport
According to Massac County Sheriff Chad Kaylor, 33-year-old Jereme C. Parker of Brookport was arrested and charged with reckless discharge of firearm and felon in possession of a weapon after sheriff’s deputies responded to an initial call for a domestic disturbance with possible shots being fired around 2:25 p.m. in the 1600 block of Greek Road in Brookport.
When deputies arrived, they made contact with a woman and three children, who were taken to safety by deputies. It was discovered that a male suspect, identified as Parker, was inside the home with a child under one year of age and armed with a rifle. Parker released the young child to deputies shortly after and then barricaded himself inside the home.
Negotiations were conducted with Parker over the next few hours. After dark, Parker was seen leaving the home in an escape attempt as a short foot chase ensued with Parker. He was captured and taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. No one was injured during the incident.
Further charges are pending upon review by the Massac County State’s Attorney office.
The Massac County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Illinois State Police, Metropolis Police, Brookport Police, Illinois Department of Conservation Police, Massac Memorial Ambulance and the Brookport Fire Department.
